To be fair, he's not insecure about where he stands now. That's why he finds his own reaction strange and intolerable. He wants to forget anyone else ever happened. Or anything. He could say that he wished Gentaro had just talked to him about it, or that they'd figured it out together... But that wouldn't have worked.
